Theatre and Social Change Fund
The Institute for Theatre and Social Change (ITSC) offers a research and development forum for expressive and interactive dramatic arts practices — relative to education, therapy, and social justice — that disrupt oppression and engage communities in meaningful dialogue for social change. The ITSC has ongoing partnerships with other schools and disciplines devoted to social change to host prominent rigorous interdisciplinary and intersectional conversations on campus. The ITSC also hosts biennial conferences with international practitioners and scholars in the field, produces critical papers exploring the efficacy and trends of this work, and provides training and networking opportunities for local, national, and international organizations dedicated to utilizing the expressive arts for social change. Among our top priorities is support of our USC Comic+Care program. Blending the art of performance with the sciences of medicine and psychology, this innovative theatrical art form improves the physical and mental well-being of hospitalized patients, as well as communities in need. SDA Comic+Care practitioners help alleviate pain and anxiety, empower individuals, and improve the day- to-day spirit for those who are isolated. Currently we serve thousands of patients and nurses annually, supporting the emotional and psychosocial needs of vulnerable populations throughout LA. With $250,000 in funds needed each year, we can keep expanding the number of trained Comic+Care practitioners in the hospital and ITSC programming offered across USC and in our community.
